Anti-Inflammatory Choices for Your Labor Day BBQ

Labor Day weekend is one of the last chances to get in a little grilling for many who love to cook outdoors. What can you do if you’re worried the usual BBQ menu will result in a week of joint pain? Here are some tips for an anti-inflammatory BBQ menu that your family will still be sure to love.

Grill with the Right Fat

The best fat to use for an anti-inflammatory meal is olive oil. Be sure to coat the foods you are grilling with the oil rather than the grill itself. That will prevent your food from sticking to the grill and will help infuse the delicious flavor into your meal.

Grilled Veggies Are Delicious

Either slice your veggies thick enough to keep them from falling into the flames or use a basket. Either way, grilling your vegetables is a great way to get the anti-inflammatory boost your body needs. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Eggplant
  • Garlic
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini

You might be surprised to see so many nightshades on the menu, but contrary to popular belief, this class of food doesn’t necessarily cause inflammation and may even help fight against it. The only exception will be if you have an allergy to solanine, the substance in nightshades that has resulted in them having a bad name. In that case, you would have to avoid the eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini.

The Right Anti-Inflammatory Proteins

Grilled fish and avocado are great ways to get protein and more healthy fats into your meal. Fish like salmon, trout, and mackerel are high in fatty acids that are good for everything from brain function to the appearance of your skin.

Fresh Fruit and Nuts for Dessert

Sugar can wreak havoc on inflammation in the body, but the sugars in fruits are better and still provide a delicious flavor. Try blueberries, cherries, and strawberries, all of which are great for inflammation. Add nuts and seeds for a little extra protein at the end of your meal.

Recovering from Back and Joint Pain

While you may keep your inflammation down with the meal, that won’t make all back or joint pain go away, especially if you also decide to play some sports at your BBQ. Rather than letting the pain get you down, give Ward Chiropractic & Rehabilitation a call. Dr. Ward can help you get back on your feet in no time with the adjustments and exercises your body needs.
