If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, the thought of a chiropractic adjustment brings to mind questions about popping sounds, twisting movements, and what actually happens during a chiropractic adjustment. Many first-time patients are curious about whether the treatment is painful, what techniques are used, and what they will feel during the process. The good news is that a chiropractic adjustment is a carefully controlled treatment performed to restore normal movement and comfort to your body. Every visit is personalized to your needs and designed to improve joint mobility, reduce discomfort, and help your body function more efficiently.
Your Initial Chiropractic Evaluation
Before performing your initial chiropractic adjustment, your chiropractor will begin with a thorough evaluation. This typically includes discussing your symptoms, reviewing your medical history, and assessing your posture, range of motion, and spinal alignment. Depending on your condition, additional orthopedic or neurological tests may be performed to determine the source of your pain and develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
How the Chiropractic Adjustment Is Performed
During your adjustment, you’ll be positioned comfortably on a specially designed chiropractic table. Your chiropractor will use their hands or a specialized instrument to apply controlled, precise force to a specific joint that isn’t moving properly.
Depending on your needs, several techniques may be used during your adjustment. Manual spinal manipulation is one of the most common methods and involves a quick, gentle thrust to restore normal joint movement. Some patients may benefit from low-force instrument-assisted adjustments, while others may benefit from gentle mobilization techniques involving slow, controlled stretching and manipulation rather than a quick thrust. The technique used for your adjustment depends on your age, comfort level, overall health, and the condition being treated.
What Does It Feel Like?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during their chiropractic adjustment. If a manual adjustment is performed, you may hear a popping or cracking sound. This is simply gas being released from the joint (similar to cracking your knuckles) and is completely normal.
You may notice an immediate improvement in mobility or a reduction in tension or discomfort afterward. Some people may experience mild soreness for a day or two after treatment, much like what you might feel after exercising, as your muscles and joints adjust to their improved alignment.
