Headache Treatment

Meet Your Fairfax Chiropractor

Do you have headaches that impact your daily life?

Headaches are a common health issue faced by many Americans.  Symptoms are varied and include tension, throbbing, nausea, light sensitivity and neck pain.  In rare cases, headaches can be caused by an underlying disease, however the majority of headaches are classified as primary headaches. This means that the headache itself is the major problem.  Primary headaches include tension, migraine, and cluster headaches.  They are frustrating for patients who often resort to pills that have their own set of side effects and/or don’t eliminate the headaches. Chiropractic care treats the pain at its source rather than simply masking it.

“My headaches felt like I was wearing a headband that was getting tighter and tighter. Thank you Dr. Ward for all you did to help alievate my migranes.”

Dr. Ward specializes in gentle spinal manipulation and adjustment specially designed to reduce headaches.  Spinal misalignments in the neck and upper back can irritate nerves and cause headaches.  Muscle spasm in the neck can also refer to the head.  If pressing on muscle knots in your neck and back make your headaches better or worse, chances are that these knots are related to your headache symptoms.  Dr. Ward uses a soft tissue technique that combines stretching and massage to reduce stubborn muscle knots and alleviate pain traveling to the head.

Your headaches may also be related to your posture.

Your headaches may also be related to your posture.  This is often true of people that work on computers.  When working on a computer, your head tends to move forward toward the screen.  Your chin pokes forward and up as you level your gaze with the monitor.  These postural problems cause misalignments of the spine and muscle spasm at the base of the skull, and headaches due to this forward head posture typically worsen slowly throughout the day.  Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue massage are helpful treatments for these headaches.  Stretches may also be incorporated to address long standing postural issues.

Because headaches can be a sign of an underlying disease, they should be evaluated promptly by a chiropractor or other healthcare professional.  Dr. Ward specializes on identifying the unique cause of your headache and discussing treatment options that will help you feel yourself and back to your daily routine once again.  For many patients our combined treatment, including both gentle adjustments and soft tissue massage, offers substantial relief.  If you are frustrated with constant pain or continuously taking pain medication, we urge you to contact our office for further information.
